In this course we focus on basic principles, architectures and types of Programmable Logic Devices (PLD) used in modern electronic systems and embedded applications. We classify PLDs as a part of ASIC technology, their historical evolution and relevant economical aspects. Our main focus is devoted to modern CPLD and FPGA circuits, their basic structures, internal architectures, main features, development tools, various methods of configuration and copyright protection. We demonstrate advantages of VHDL description, advanced circuit simulations and practical aspects of usage modern Altera and Mentor Graphics CAD systems. In parallel with theoretical knowledge our students master also practical work experiences with modern CPLD and FPGA circuits and development tools from Altera.
